Surface preparation

Surface preparation is extremely important when applying any self adhesive material and unfortunately is overlooked on many occasions. It’s not rocket science, just some important things to do to ensure the tape bonds correctly.

Ensure any surfaces are clean and free of dirt, dust, rust, flaking or peeling paint, oxides, oils or grease. If need be, abrade the surface so that you have a clean and smooth surface to bond to. When you have finished cleaning the surface wipe over with an IPA based cleaner and a lint free cloth to make sure that there is no residue left on the surface. Under NO circumstances use methylated spirits or turps as these are oil based and can leave a residue that can affect the bond. With some materials such as low surface energy plastics, you may need to apply a primer to the surface before tape application.

Air tightness in buildings

As building code regulations in Australia become more stringent, air tightness of the building envelope requires more detail in sealing any penetrations through the exterior fabric.

Window and door installation is an area that is of major concern due to air leakage because of poor installation. We have a quality range of different products available to stop air and water ingress, so please contact us and we can discuss your requirements and advise the correct product to use. If you have a need for air tightness testing contact John for further information of the services that ATTSA (Air Tightness Testing Services Australia P/L) can provide.
